eSalon’s Color Chart: How My Colorist Makes My Custom Color

eSalon is my new favorite at-home hair color. Why? Because it’s like going to the salon without ever leaving home. Unlike off-the-shelf hair colors, every individual color is crafted from scratch by a licensed colorist using their chart as a foundation to align with my personal hair goals. My colorist considers aspects such as current hair color, type, history, complexion, eye color, and gray coverage needs to concoct a hue that fits perfectly—because nobody should have to fit in a box.

To devise a custom color, my colorist uses the salon’s quiz to gain insights into my hair history, concerns, and aspirations. It's similar to an initial consultation with a colorist at a salon. STEP ONE: My colorist got to know me and my goals.

STEP TWO: My colorist crafts the custom color from scratch.

In the quiz, I get to see eSalon’s color chart and pick my preferred shade—but this may not be the exact shade I receive in the mail. My colorist uses my selection to understand my ultimate goal before formulating a custom hair dye that will get me there.

Just to paint a clear picture: I have light brown hair and wanted to go for a medium brunette shade with copper undertones to get a reddish result. Now my colorist understands the starting point and the goal. However, she decided that I needed a hair dye formula with both copper and gold undertones to perfectly achieve my desired finish while flattering natural features.

If my colorist simply sent a copper hair color right off the shelf, I might have been a little disappointed with the final outcome. That's why my colorist carefully considers my skin

STEP THREE: My custom hair color arrives at my doorstep.

Now for the exciting part: my custom color has arrived! In each Custom Color Set, personalized instructions tailored to my needs and an in-depth look at my unique shade are included.

Depending on your hair length and history, you may receive one or two bottles of color. Since I have hair that was previously color-treated, I received two bottles with different formulas: one for the freshly grown-out roots and another for the rest of the hair that already contains pigments. This helps me get an even color from root to tip rather than light roots and dark mid-lengths to ends.
